The Monday crew

Six holidays are fixed to a Monday or land on one in 2027. Each is a free three-day weekend, and each turns into four days with one day of PTO on the Tuesday:

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday 18 January 2027): book 1 day off (Tue 19 Jan 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 16 Jan – Tue 19 Jan 2027).
• Presidents Day (Monday 15 February 2027): book 1 day off (Tue 16 Feb 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 13 Feb – Tue 16 Feb 2027).
• Memorial Day (Monday 31 May 2027): book 1 day off (Tue 1 Jun 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 29 May – Tue 1 Jun 2027).
• Independence Day, observed on Monday 5 July 2027 because the 4th is a Sunday. Four days of PTO lets you book 4 days off (Tue 6, Wed 7, Thu 8 and Fri 9 Jul 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 3 Jul – Sun 11 Jul 2027).
• Labor Day (Monday 6 September 2027): four days of PTO lets you book 4 days off (Tue 7, Wed 8, Thu 9 and Fri 10 Sep 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 4 Sep – Sun 12 Sep 2027).
• Columbus Day (Monday 11 October 2027): the same trick lets you book 4 days off (Tue 12, Wed 13, Thu 14 and Fri 15 Oct 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Sun 17 Oct 2027).

The Tuesday after a Monday holiday is the quiet hero here. If half the team has already grabbed the Friday before, the Tuesday does exactly the same job.

The Friday crew

When a holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees get the Friday before (OPM federal holidays). In 2027 that happens three times, and New Year's Day 2027 is a real Friday on top:

• New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027. If you are still off from 2026, four days of PTO lets you book 4 days off (Tue 29, Wed 30 and Thu 31 Dec 2026 and Mon 4 Jan 2027) and get 7 days off in a row (Tue 29 Dec 2026 – Mon 4 Jan 2027).
• Juneteenth is observed on Friday 18 June 2027.
• Christmas Day is observed on Friday 24 December 2027.
• New Year's Day 2028 is a Saturday, so the last federal holiday of 2027 is New Year's Day 2028 (observed) on Friday 31 December 2027.

Juneteenth to the 4th of July

Juneteenth (observed Friday 18 June 2027) and Independence Day (observed Monday 5 July 2027) are only two weeks apart. Four days of PTO the week before Juneteenth lets you book 4 days off (Mon 14, Tue 15, Wed 16 and Thu 17 Jun 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 12 Jun – Sun 20 Jun 2027). Go all in and join them up:

If your employer does not give Juneteenth, the same block still works around the 4th, it just costs one more day.

The Thursday pair

Veterans Day is Thursday 11 November 2027. One day of PTO lets you book 1 day off (Fri 12 Nov 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Thu 11 Nov – Sun 14 Nov 2027). It is a federal holiday, but private employers decide whether they give it, so check your company's holiday list first.

Thanksgiving is Thursday 25 November 2027. One day of PTO lets you book 1 day off (Fri 26 Nov 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Thu 25 Nov – Sun 28 Nov 2027). Want the whole week? Three days lets you book 3 days off (Mon 22, Tue 23 and Wed 24 Nov 2027) and get 6 days off in a row (Sat 20 Nov – Thu 25 Nov 2027), and the weekend after is yours too if you add the Friday.

Christmas 2027 and New Year's Eve

With Christmas observed on Friday 24 December 2027 and New Year's Day 2028 (observed) on Friday 31 December 2027, the last two weeks of the year have a holiday at each end. Four days of PTO lets you book 4 days off (Mon 27, Tue 28, Wed 29 and Thu 30 Dec 2027) and get 10 days off in a row (Fri 24 Dec 2027 – Sun 2 Jan 2028). Five days lets you book 5 days off (Thu 23, Mon 27, Tue 28, Wed 29 and Thu 30 Dec 2027) and get 11 days off in a row (Thu 23 Dec 2027 – Sun 2 Jan 2028).

Does any of this apply to you?

The federal holidays are set for federal employees. There is no federal law that makes private employers give paid holidays or paid vacation: the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require pay for time not worked, so it comes down to your employer's policy (US Department of Labor). In practice that means two checks before you book: which of these days your company actually closes on, and whether it follows the Friday and Monday observed dates or keeps the holiday on the weekend.
