Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October, not the late-November Thursday Americans mean. In 2027 it is Monday 11 October 2027. Here is which provinces get it as a stat holiday, and how far a few vacation days stretch it.
When is Thanksgiving 2027 in Canada?
Thanksgiving Day is the second Monday of October under federal and most provincial calendars. In 2027 that is Monday 11 October 2027. The Canada Thanksgiving page has the date for 2026 and 2027 side by side.
Which provinces get Thanksgiving off?
Thanksgiving is a counted day off in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It is not counted in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador: in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island it can be a shop closing day without being a paid public holiday under the employment statute, so it only counts if your employer gives it. Check your province page and your contract before you plan around it (Ontario: public holidays for the Ontario rule).
Stretch Thanksgiving into a longer break
Because it is already a Monday, the free long weekend is Saturday to Monday. The Tuesday after is the quiet bridge:
- Ontario: one vacation day lets you book 1 day off (Tue 12 Oct 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Tue 12 Oct 2027). Four days let you book 4 days off (Tue 12, Wed 13, Thu 14 and Fri 15 Oct 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Sun 17 Oct 2027).
- British Columbia: one day lets you book 1 day off (Tue 12 Oct 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Tue 12 Oct 2027). Four days let you book 4 days off (Tue 12, Wed 13, Thu 14 and Fri 15 Oct 2027) and get 9 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Sun 17 Oct 2027).
- Quebec: one day lets you book 1 day off (Tue 12 Oct 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Sat 9 Oct – Tue 12 Oct 2027).
For a full nine-day autumn break in Ontario:
Book off: Tue 12, Wed 13, Thu 14 and Fri 15 Oct 2027.

Remembrance Day after Thanksgiving
Remembrance Day is Thursday 11 November 2027. It is a stat holiday in some provinces and not in others, so the next free long weekend after Thanksgiving depends on where you live. In British Columbia, for example, one vacation day around Remembrance Day lets you book 1 day off (Fri 12 Nov 2027) and get 4 days off in a row (Thu 11 Nov – Sun 14 Nov 2027). Use your province long-weekends page to see what you actually get.

What the law says about vacation around Thanksgiving
Vacation entitlement is set by each province (and by the Canada Labour Code for federally regulated jobs). In Ontario, for example, you get at least two weeks of vacation after each 12-month year, and your employer schedules when it is taken within the rules of the Employment Standards Act (Ontario: vacation). Thanksgiving week is popular for travel, so ask early even when the Monday is already a holiday.
